At this point, it’s hard to imagine a time without Bottega Veneta, Let Them Misunderstand You Judge You Gossip About You Shirt but then again, that’s what we thought about #OldCeline, and here we are. What I’m trying to say (without dragging you into the post–Phoebe Philo Celine depression) is that #NewBottega—run by Creative Director Daniel Lee—has only really been around for a little over a year, but the impact it has already had feels more iconic than ever. The amazing thing about this industry is that even the most settled heritage brands can make a new name for themselves, and thanks to what Lee did with Bottega, we now have a brand that filled the sartorial void that the loss of something as iconic as #OldCeline once occupied. All this industry talk might sound a bit niche, but on a more mainstream scale, this brand has created some of the most talked-about, -purchased, and -photographed items of the entire year—items even people who don’t really care about fashion at all might be able to identify. “Between The Pouch bag and the shoes, Bottega had a huge year. I saw people of all different styles wearing it,” said one of our readers. This means that while, yes, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley owns a small army of The Pouch bags, consumers of all calibers are buying into this brand, and they’re doing it with vigor. “Bottega Veneta for sure. Daniel Lee’s creations dominated the streets,” said street style photographer Acielle of Style du Monde, and since these are the street style awards, this winner seems beyond fitting.

In the midst of navigating where I’m heading and where I’m off to next during fashion week in New York (I do, in fact, live here, but getting lost remains my specialty), Let Them Misunderstand You Judge You Gossip About You Shirt I make it a point every season to scope out the cool items that everyone is wearing, specifically looking for ones that pop up again and again. On the apparel side, there were certainly a few repeats, with big-ticket items including scarf coats, distressed leather jackets, full skirts, and anything really that feels ballet-inspired. The handbag selection, however, was by far the main event. Throughout New York Fashion Week, show attendees debuted a vast array of bags, from classic shapes by the likes of Celine, Louis Vuitton, and Chanel to more on-trend silhouettes and accents like bowlers, metallics, and perhaps most prominent, surrealist styles. Knowing the brevity of the handbag moments this season, I took it upon myself to narrow down the trends I spotted most outside of seven days worth of nonstop shows, presentations, and previews this week to the six that feel most relevant and buzzy. Nearly every stop in your day leaves you with another knickknack of some sort, meaning that your handbag of choice needs to allow for new additions on top of all the essentials fashion week calls for (e.g., hand sanitizer, portable chargers, snacks, and in the case of this season, Rhode’s Peptide Lip Treatment), and for all of that, only an unstructured bag will really do. Luckily, thanks to brands like Khaite, Ree Projects, Bottega Veneta, and more, slouchy, anti-structure bags are a dime a dozen these days.
