One of my favorite parts of New York as a fashion editor is the constant outfit inspiration courtesy of the Manhattan sidewalks. Night Knight shirt A brief walk through Downtown can tell you what people will be wearing in six months, the freshest way to style your old clothes, and the new staple you didn’t know you needed in a mere 20 minutes. This aspirational and effortless yet inspired dressing is the reason I’ve turned to New Yorkers for what trends they’ll be guaranteed to indulge in 2023. This year’s fashion was defined by a resurgence of going-out clothes, an onslaught of Y2K throwback fashion, and an increased focus on the capsule wardrobe, among other trends. While I expect those themes to carry over into the New Year, there are a few buzzy trends worth noting as you fill up your 2023 cart. After polling my New York friends and gathering my observations around the city, I’ve rounded up a trend-based shopping list below that will have you feeling cosmopolitan in an instant. Per the runways and the city sidewalks, parachute pants are making their return from the MC Hammer era. Whether it be a low-slung nylon pair à la Hailey Bieber or billowing satin cargo pants, the oversize style is a guaranteed trend for 2023. Due to the loose fit, opt for a more tailored silhouette on top and pair with heels.
Night Knight shirt, hoodie, sweater, longsleeve and ladies t-shirt
I’m in no way athletically inclined (something my P.E. teacher will still back up to this day), Night Knight shirt but now I can finally feel part of the team as sporting stripes—the sort seen in rugby, cricket and other ball sports (I assume)—ran throughout the collections. All of fashion will agree that Dries Van Noten did it best by way of lounge pants and minidresses, whilst Victoria Beckham took the knitted approach with a sweater. A pre-kick-off moment for Gucci’s new Jackie bag offering, too, which collectors will be batting one another out of the way to get their hands on. “Across the board, brands are retiring streamlined stripes for something a little more playful,” says Munro. “Tapping into the sporty side of the print, the colourful trend is a refreshing retort to the past season’s obsession with a quieter palette. Styling well with easy denim and basic tees, these wearable stripes are set to transcend the runways in 2024.”. “Casual daywear has a preppy new mood as designers reimagined the classic polo and rugby shirts,” confirms Wiggins. “Our edit for S/S 24 has grown by 48% vs. last year and offers a variety of options, from Sacai’s pleated polo dress to Dries Van Noten’s colourful, oversized rugby shirts. For a modern take, style with sequins, as seen at 16Arlington.”
