Donatello holding watermelon and chicken drumstick Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Niggatello shirt
Remember those Ninja Turtles? Used to be obsessed as a kid, right alongside every other kid in the cosmos. I had all the action figures, even the sewer playset – you know the one. This whole “Donatello holding watermelon and chicken drumstick Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Niggatello shirt” thing, well, it’s… it’s a lot. The mental image is already chaotic, which, I suppose, is fitting given the source material. Donatello, ever the brains of the operation, probably wouldn’t be caught dead with a drumstick in one hand and a watermelon slice in the other. He’d be too busy figuring out how to weaponize the watermelon, or maybe craft some new, highly advanced pizza-slicing mechanism.
Donatello holding watermelon and chicken drumstick Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Niggatello shirt description
My friend, Mark, back in fourth grade, he always loved Leonardo. He insisted Leonardo was the leader, and thus, the coolest. I, however, always gravitated towards Donatello. Maybe it was the bo staff – seemed way more practical than a sword. Plus, Donatello seemed… smart. Like, the kind of smart you wanted on your side when things got rough. Though, picturing him now, with this unlikely feast in hand, makes me laugh. How bizarre to juxtapose that with a shirt featuring that other… word. It’s just jarring.

The watermelon, I get it. Summer, refreshment, turtles always living in a humid environment. A chicken drumstick, though? Where would they even -get- a chicken drumstick? I mean, unless they are able to order delivery from a place like KFC using the internet and paying by bitcoin? It’s a ludicrous image, the kind of absurdity that makes me chuckle, even though I’m trying to process this… particular shirt. The whole concept highlights how certain things – like nostalgia – can get tangled up with… let’s say, less savory aspects of society.

I remember once, trying to make my own Ninja Turtle mask out of a green garbage bag and some rubber bands. It looked terrible, of course. I thought my mom was going to have a ass attack when I came downstairs with that thing. But I -felt- like Donatello, for a little while anyway. This shirt, well, it’s a far cry from the innocent playtime of my youth.

The “Niggatello” bit, though… That’s where everything grinds to a halt. It’s impossible to ignore the loaded nature of that word. The juxtaposition is jarring. I find myself wrestling with the impulse to laugh at the ridiculousness of the image and the undeniable offense it represents. It’s hard to make heads or tails of the intent behind it. I have some ideas, but this isn’t the forum to share them.

Ultimately, the shirt itself, the very -idea- of it, is a stark reminder of how easily something like childhood nostalgia can become contaminated by prejudice. It’s a collision of worlds – the fun-loving turtles, the carefree days of youth, and something incredibly offensive and hurtful. The image of Donatello, watermelon and drumstick in hand, is permanently stained with something else entirely. It leaves a sour taste in my mouth, and it’s a feeling that will linger for a while, I’m afraid.

Great shirt, great fit! Is more of an orangey gold in color. Definitely not the yellow shown.
I will never reveal the Wu-Tang secret.

It’s perfect size

The shirt is pretty cool its not the cheap cotton that a lot of shirts are made out of. I normally wear a large but from reading the reviews the shirt was fit a little big so I bought a medium and it fit perfectly.

Good for price. Bargain/novelty use, medium to medium/light weight.
Good for general or novelty use, but these are not heavy-weight like upper-end graphic tees. If you want good and heavy t-shirts for work, these are not it.
For embroidering, these do need more stabilizing than the white heavy-duty t-shirts you can get at a certain warehouse store, but I needed a good choice of colors. The colors are rich and the ones I’ve received have had no blotches and the seams have been solid. But I do check every shirt before I work on it.
These do begin to show wear/age after 5-6 washings, but if you just need smart-looking shirts for events like workshops and birthdays, these will do!
