Once the eight weeks have passed, students have the option to enroll in Tempest Aftercare, which provides access to extended care through additional educational content and a tapped-in virtual community. There is also a meet-up program in development, which is already in place in select cities including New York, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Kansas City, and Denver. While Tempest’s offerings might not sound all that different from other group-therapy approaches, Whitaker underlines the broad array of drinking concerns it’s meant to address. “[In the current recovery landscape], we don’t account for a spectrum, and focus on a binary—alcoholic vs. normal drinker—thus we have absolutely no effective system to treat those on their way to end-spectrum addiction,” she says, adding, “there is no ‘pre-addiction.’In 2019, with women’s rights constantly under attack and alcohol addiction among women in the U.S. continuing to rise (between 2002 and 2013, the rate of alcohol use disorder among women increased by about 84 percent), Whitaker believes women especially are at an inflection point. “Women are getting fed up with being spoon-fed an idea that alcohol is a healthy and necessary part of every facet of our existence, from dating to sex to motherhood to business dinners to celebrations to book clubs,” she says. Whether a woman is worried about addiction or just tired of wasting a day with a hangover, Tempest intends to accompany them on their sobriety journey. “People come up with all sorts of reasons why they don’t belong here,” Whitaker says, “and I promise you: People belong here.”
