When hundreds of people are vying for dozens of photographers’ attention before and after a show, Let Me Finish Chef Brian Tsao Frenchy’s Ding Dong Sauce T-shirt it’s easy to see why attention-grabbing outfits are the norm at fashion weeks across the land. Bold colors, It accessories, prints, trend upon trend, and clashing styles are the street style norm, but I’ve found there to be a bit of a shift over the past few seasons. Pared-down, low-key outfits that are polished and chic as opposed to casual are creeping back in, so minimalism lovers can rejoice. Pieces such as trench coats, pleated trousers, nipped-in blazers, black dresses, and straight-leg jeans are standing out among a sea of maximalist outfits (the fashion-week term to define those looks is “peacocking”) as of late. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with peacocking if that suits one’s aesthetic, but the difference when it comes to these anti-trend outfits is that they translate seamlessly to real life. Yes, you will spot some trends among the looks I’ve rounded up below, but they tend to be subtle and are paired with basics instead of other trendy pieces. With that, keep scrolling to see some of the best standout anti-trend looks from New York, London, Milan, and Paris and shop anti-trend pieces for your own wardrobe.

New York Fashion Week has finished for another season, Let Me Finish Chef Brian Tsao Frenchy’s Ding Dong Sauce T-shirt and I have looked through thousands of street style pictures of what the buyers, editors, and influencers were wearing to the shows this year. New York winters are famously severe, but the practicality of dressing for the cold didn’t stop the fashion crowd from serving up some innovative styling tricks. There were eight items in particular that I kept seeing people wearing and that have inspired my own new-season shopping list. The outerwear game in New York was particularly strong, with lots of snakeskin colorful jackets, leather blazers, interesting trench coats, and ivory classic overcoats. No winter outfit is complete without an amazing pair of boots, and it was a tale of two boot trends this season—oversize track-sole boots and knee-high leather boots worn over trousers and jeans. As for the accessories, New Yorkers had a lot of piled-up gold-chain jewelry and the all-American classic, the baseball cap. Keep scrolling to see—and shop—the eight items we want to buy this week thanks to New York Fashion Week.
